Family Kitchen is a Central Oregon nonprofit that has been providing nutritious meals to anyone in need in a safe and caring environment since 1986. Our board is currently seeking a new treasurer as our current treasurer's term ends.

Board Member, Treasurer

Currently, Family Kitchen is actively searching for a new board treasurer. Our current treasurer’s term ends at the end of 2025.

The treasurer will perform or oversee the performance of the following duties:

(a) ensure the proper management and control of all funds of the Corporation; 

(b) prepare full and accurate financial records on a timely basis of all the income, expenses, and assets of the Corporation; 

(c) ensure that written financial statements and reports on the financial affairs of the Corporation are presented to the Board of Directors at least once each quarter at a meeting of the Board of Directors; and 

(d) provide financial information necessary to prepare and file the required reports to state and federal government agencies, showing the income, disbursements, and assets of.

In addition, the following general board job description applies to the treasurer position: 

Serving on Family Kitchen’s Board of Directors requires a willingness to attend Board meetings, stay informed about the affairs of the organization, and make decisions that you believe are in the best interest of the organization. It is both a serious matter and a part-time volunteer commitment. 

Board members have three legal duties: 1) the duty of Diligence or Due Care, 2) the duty of Loyalty to the organization, and 3) the duty of Obedience to the Law, to make sure that the organization is always operating in compliance with the law. 

Family Kitchen’s Board of Directors meets monthly, in-person to discuss the organization’s programs and activities, future planning and strategy, financial affairs and other current matters, and to make governance decisions. These meetings typically last 1.5 hours. 

In addition to the monthly Board meeting, Board members typically serve on a Board committee and/or participate in organization-related activities that are aligned with their expertise and interest. Board members are expected to be familiar with Family Kitchen’s services by volunteering for at least 4 meal shifts before starting their first Board term or within their first 6 months of being on the Board. Many Board members continue regularly volunteering during their time on the Board. A director can generally perform his or her Board duties in 10 hours or less per month. 

Following is a list of responsibilities for members of Family Kitchen’s Board of Directors. 

No Board member is responsible for individually fulfilling the following responsibilities: it is the job of the Board as a whole, working in collaboration with the organization’s workers, whether they are volunteer workers, contractors or paid employees. 

Further, in performing their duties Board members have the right to rely on the advice, information and assurances of the organization’s officers, staff, advisers, bookkeepers, accountants, attorneys, and other advisers. 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF FAMILY KITCHEN’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS: 

1. Determine the organization’s mission and objectives and see that the organization’s programs accomplish its mission. 

2. Select and hire the Executive Director, set the Executive Director’s compensation and benefits, support, and supervise the work of the Executive Director and conduct regular performance evaluations.

3. Determine, monitor, evaluate, and refine the organization’s programs. 4. Ensure effective strategic planning for the future. 

5. Approve the organization’s budget and expenditures. 

6. Exercise financial oversight and see that proper financial controls are used; proper records are kept and necessary reports are filed to minimize the risk of theft or embezzlement of the organization’s funds and assets. 

7. Ensure that adequate funds and resources are available for the organization to accomplish its mission and objectives. 

8. See that financial assets and non-financial resources are managed effectively. 

9. Establish the organization’s formal policies, review them regularly and improve them as needed. 

10. Review and approve personnel policies, monitor their application, and hear grievances involving the Executive Director. 

11. Assist with Board development, including identification and recruitment of potential new Board members, orientation, ongoing training of Board members and assessment of Board performance. 

12. Enhance the organization’s public image and connection with its community, donors, members, and volunteers. 

13. A commitment and intention to serve on the Board for a 3 year term, with the option of renewing once for a second 3 year term. 

14. Attend at least 7 Board meetings per year, which should include at least one meeting per quarter. 

15. Participate and show commitment to Board activities. 

16. Have a strong understanding of the organization’s operations and service. Board members are encouraged to achieve this through volunteering at a monthly meal service. 

16. Willingness to serve on a board committee as needed. Committees include: Finance, Personnel, Board Development, Marketing, Fundraising
