Breakout Session

- The Data Security Gaps Most Small Firms Don't Know They Have

Shannon Kaiser, General Manager, Summit HQ

Shannon Kaiser

Shannon Kaiser is General Manager of Summit, where he leads the strategy and delivery of cloud solutions for small businesses. He began his career in technical support and advanced through roles including Network Engineer, Platform Architect, CTO, and Chief Delivery Officer. His experience across engineering, product, and operations gives him a practical perspective on solving complex technology challenges while keeping customer outcomes at the center.

(10/20/26)

Your firm may have strong security tools in place and still have gaps you don’t know about. This session will explore the everyday blind spots that can put sensitive firm and client data at risk, from untested backups and outdated access permissions to AI tools and third-party vendors. You’ll learn how to identify these gaps, determine which ones matter most, and take practical steps to strengthen your firm’s security posture.

This session is available to registrants only.

- Beyond the IRS Template: Building a WISP That Fits Your Firm

Nate Olson, Founder, N.O. IT Strategy

Nate Olson

Nate Olson is the founder of N.O. IT Strategy LLC, an independent fractional CIO and IT governance firm based in Roseburg, Oregon. He has 17 years in IT across managed service providers and internal IT, seven of them as an IT Director and CIO.

N.O. IT Strategy sells no hardware or software and takes no vendor commissions. Nate works with business owners and leadership teams on IT strategy, vendor accountability, and security risk, and with tax and accounting firms on the FTC Safeguards Rule. His Strategic Briefings include a three-part series on the Safeguards Rule. He holds an AAS in Computer Network Operations from Lane Community College.

(10/20/26)

If your firm prepares tax returns, the FTC Safeguards Rule requires a written information security program, which the IRS refers to as a WISP. The IRS offers a sample template in Publication 5708. It’s a place to start, but it describes a sample firm, not yours. This session covers what the rule expects your WISP to contain, how a risk assessment feeds it, what changes for firms below the 5,000-consumer threshold, and what should trigger an update. You’ll leave with a clear picture of what your WISP should say about your own firm and the questions to ask of the one you have today.

It examines the 401(h) Advantage and its potential Tax Trifecta: tax-deductible employer contributions, tax-deferred growth, and potentially income-tax-free reimbursements for qualified medical expenses in retirement. Attendees also learn to use the CPA 60-Second Calculator for preliminary contribution and potential tax-savings ranges, and built-in client-fit guidance.
