Building the future together: A final message from your Chair

The profession at a crossroads
As I close my term as Chair of the Oregon Society of CPAs, I want to share my hope for what comes next — not just for OSCPA, but for each of us as professionals.
This past year has been anything but typical. Across the country, states are debating licensure requirements, and the pipeline of new CPAs is under pressure. At the same time, technology is transforming how we work, and clients expect more insight, more speed, and more value. Our mission remains clear: to promote the CPA profession, strengthen relationships, and elevate competence and integrity. But how we achieve that mission will evolve in ways that demand curiosity and collaboration.
Advocacy: Our first line of defense
If there’s one message I hope every member takes from my term, it’s this: advocacy matters. Our license—the credential we worked so hard to earn—is not guaranteed. Every legislative session, OSCPA volunteers review bills that could impact our profession in so many ways. That work is invisible to many, but it is vital. Going forward, we need more members engaged in advocacy. Attend a legislative day. Join a committee. Write a letter. Your voice matters, and together we can protect the integrity of our profession.
Technology: Embrace the change
As an early member of Gen X, I have witnessed tremendous changes in how we work and new technologies will continue their impact. Artificial intelligence, automation, and advanced analytics are reshaping the work we do. I plan on being curious and adaptable. OSCPA can help by offering training and resources that demystify emerging technologies.
Lifelong learning and leadership
Our profession is built on trust, and trust is built on competence. Continuing education isn’t just a requirement—it’s a responsibility. But learning goes beyond technical skills. Leadership, communication, and collaboration are just as critical. I encourage every member to seek opportunities to lead—whether through committee service, mentoring, or community engagement. OSCPA has expanded my network and opened doors I never imagined. Serving your professional community is one of the best investments you can make in your career.
Diversity and inclusion: A strategic imperative
OSCPA has been at the forefront of advocating for alternative pathways to licensure, and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made. Opening doors for talented individuals from diverse backgrounds will strengthen our profession. Alternative pathways are one piece of a larger puzzle: creating a profession that reflects the diversity of the clients and communities we serve. We have all seen how diverse teams make better decisions, drive innovation, and strengthen trust. I am positive that OSCPA will continue to champion initiatives that welcome people from all backgrounds.
The power of participation
If there’s a theme that runs through everything I’ve shared, it’s this: participation. OSCPA thrives when members do many things like show up, lead, testify, and teach. The possibilities to participate are endless and every contribution matters. Yes, it takes time. But the return on that investment is extraordinary—new relationships, new opportunities, and the satisfaction of shaping the future of our profession.
Looking ahead
I’m confident in OSCPA’s ability to adapt and lead. We have a strong strategic plan, dedicated volunteers, and a membership committed to excellence. As I step down as Chair, I want to thank each of you for the privilege of serving. This Society is more than an organization—it’s a community. And communities thrive when members care, connect, and contribute. Thank you for your trust, your engagement, and your commitment to our profession. I look forward to seeing what we accomplish in the years ahead.
