Tips for creating a strong first impression with your resume
Before you can earn your CPA license, you need experience – that means landing an internship or entry-level role. But to get your foot in the door, you’ll need a solid, well-crafted resume.
A resume tells your story: your education, experience, and potential. Employers use it to answer three big questions:
- Can you do the work?
- Will you do the work?
- How will you fit in with the team?
Here’s how to make sure your first resume gives them a confident “yes.”

1. Stick to a clear format
Creativity is great – but clarity is better. Keep your resume easy to read and professional. Start with:
- Contact information (name, phone, email, LinkedIn)
- Education (school, degree, expected graduation date, GPA)
- Experience (internships, part-time jobs, volunteer roles)
- Campus involvement (clubs, leadership, community service)
- Skills (technical tools, software, languages)

2. Don’t skip your GPA
Even if you’re early in your studies, include your GPA. Employers use it as one way to gauge academic performance and attention to detail.

3. Highlight what you learned, not just what you did
If your work experience includes roles outside accounting, such as retail, food service, or camp counselling, include them! Focus on transferable skills: teamwork, leadership, communication, handling money, and problem-solving.

4. Show involvement beyond the classroom
Employers want well-rounded candidates. Highlight clubs, volunteer roles, and leadership experiences, especially if you’ve taken initiative or managed responsibilities alongside coursework.

5. Be authentic
Your resume should reflect who you are and what you’re genuinely interested in. Avoid claiming an interest in audit if your passion lies in tax or advisory. Employers appreciate honesty and self-awareness.
