Major Subjects

Participants will review Steele's (2010) comprehensive research examining the negative impacts of stereotype threat on learning and communication as well as explore positive psychology-based strategies that diminish negative effects. While Steele's research has been developing since 1999, the application of positive psychology within individualized interventions is an effective response to an overwhelming phenomenon. Stereotype threat has been described as "the air you breathe" – an environmental context difficult to detect but unmistakably impacts behavior. As professionals, we have an influence on "the air" breathed within our environments. Finding ways to innovatively minimize factors linked to dampening learning, interpersonal interactions, and general behavior is essential for thriving workplaces.
