The Oregon Humane Society (OHS) is the largest humane society in the Northwest adopting more animals from our Portland shelter than any other single-facility shelter on the West Coast.

Position Summary
Primary duties include performing work that is directly related to the management/general business operations of the Oregon Humane Society, with primary focus on administering non-profit fiscal operations, financial systems, required reporting, month end closings and budgeting and forecasting support.

Primary Duties include (but not limited to)

  • Assists VP of Finance with all aspects of the organization’s accounting and finance activities in accordance with established non-profit accounting principles, practices and procedures including developing and implementing sound fiscal policies, and internal controls necessary for quality assurance and the successful management of Financial Operations.
  • Administers financial systems and processes, including analyzing and verifying financial records, general ledger account reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, fixed assets, inventory and purchasing, journal entries, allocations, and monthly accruals.
  • Manages the accuracy and productivity of day-to-day activities of fiscal operations.
  • Performs month and year-end close and financial report preparation.
  • Leads annual audit and 990 preparation processes including interfacing with outside auditors, preparing schedules, and providing financial reports and supporting documentation of fiscal transactions.
  • Maintains organization inventory accounts: reconciles inventory accounts to the general ledger, prepares inventory analysis reports, assists in the improvement in internal controls related to inventory, and participates in physical inventory processes.
  • Maintains organization fixed asset accounts: reconciles fixed accounts to the general ledger, prepares fixed asset analysis reports, assists in the improvement in internal controls related to fixed asset, and participates in physical inventory of fixed assets.
  • Prepares balance sheet and other account analyses and reconciliations.
  • Participates in the annual budget development and forecasting process.
  • Performs special projects, as needed.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent education.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in accounting.
  • 5+ years’ experience working on enterprise level accounting systems.
  • Advanced level Excel and financial reporting skills
  • Must have Non-profit accounting experience with operating budget greater than $5M and the ability to understand and to properly apply non-profit revenue recognition and net asset concepts.
  • Ability to perform mathematical functions and to comprehend interrelationship of various computer functions.
  • Able to process complex verbal and written instructions and translate them into a series of logical problem solving steps.
  • Able to handle sensitive financial and personnel data according to the highest standards of confidentiality and ethical conduct
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, and decision making skills.
  • Ability to evaluate the efficiency of programs, systems and procedures and make recommendations for change when needed.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, initiative and discipline.
  • Valid Driver’s License and proof of insurance is required.

Preferred

  • CPA
  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge accounting and/or fundraising software.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed concurrently in an office and animal shelter environment.
  • Work schedule is Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend or evening work required to support special events and during busier times of the year.
  • Noise exposure is light to moderate.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolong sitting, frequently 6-8 hours per day.
  • Prolonged exposure to video terminal and computer hardware.
  • Able to perform mathematical functions and to comprehend interrelationship of various computer functions.
  • Able to process complex verbal and written instructions and translate them into a series of logical problem solving steps.
  • Daily keyboarding for prolonged periods of time, including use of electronic peripheral equipment and ten-key pad.
  • Able to utilize phone and email systems, photocopiers, scanners, postage meter and other small office equipment.
  • Able to place and retrieve information in and from file folders and file cabinets.
  • Occasional bending, squatting, lifting and carrying of objects weighing 25-30 lbs.
  • Able remain calm while working under stressful, time sensitive conditions.
  • Occasional driving on public roadways in varying weather and traffic conditions.
