What is the Profession's Best Political Investment?

The Oregon Certified Public Accountants Legislative Action Committee is the best political tool for the profession in the state of Oregon. As you know, the political and regulatory climate is always in a constant state of transformation. Given this factor; you should be supporting candidates who share similar views on business and professional issues. Your individual contribution to a candidate can only go so far and there is a way to maximize your contribution(s). You should join forces with your Oregon CPA colleagues who share your business interests to maximize the profession's political visibility and clout.

What is the OCPA/Legislative Action Committee?

The OCPA/Legislative Action Committee is the profession's political action committee in Oregon. The PAC was formed over twenty years ago to raise funds and provide financial assistance to candidates for Oregon legislative office that actively support the profession. Every dollar contributed to the OCPA/Legislative Action Committee remains in Oregon to help elect candidates to public office. The PAC is a separate committee regulated under the Oregon Secretary of State and is not funded by membership dues dollars of the Oregon Society of CPAs. It is wholly funded and supported by concerned CPAs.

Contributions or gifts to the Oregon Certified Public Accountants Legislative Action Committee are not tax deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes. However, a $50 single / $100 joint tax credit may be taken for contributions to political action committees.

Why Should I Participate?

You should contribute to the profession's political action committee because you directly benefit from the program. The profession has one way to ensure that what is being legislated in Salem is productive to your business interests - by being heard! Thousands of other interests are being represented before Oregon's legislature. There has never been a more important time for Oregon CPAs to pool their political resources with their professional colleagues.

Your contribution reminds lawmakers that CPAs are politically aware and actively involved in the issues affecting Oregon professionals and businesses.

Do I Have Any Input?

Yes, you have a voice! You are the eyes and ears of the profession. Your insights and viewpoints are essential in determining which candidates receive OCPA/Legislative Action Committee contributions to ensure that your monies are maximized. A committee of your peers approves all contributions. You and your colleagues, who have personal relationships with legislators, distribute the contributions to guarantee that you stay politically involved with your legislator.

How Do I Join The Team?

The profession is doing great work. However, it doesn't come easily or inexpensively. Unless we gain access to Oregon's lawmakers and explain our side of the story they have no reason to support the CPA profession. Through relationships that are developed we achieve results. However, there are no guarantees that this can be sustained without the continued support of CPAs.

Your dedication to continue these efforts is critical. The issues are only growing in complexity. Now is the time to make the decision to take steps to protect your license and the license of your colleagues.

Just remember that the load is lighter when the whole team works together. If you would like more information on how you can help, contact Cheryl Langley at rhmranru@yuyti.cvt or call 1-800-255-1470 / 503-641-7200, ext. 25.
